Which knife should I buy for my kitchen?

How to Choose the Right Cutlery:
A Guide to Our Top Brands

by Joanne Hinton

Choosing the right knife can transform the way you cook. The best option depends on your cooking style, hand size, and how much maintenance you’re willing to do. Here’s a breakdown of the knife lines we carry and who they’re best for.

Zwilling: Durable German Steel for Everyday Power

Zwilling knives are built with high-quality German steel that holds an edge well and stands up to heavy use. They’re ideal for all-purpose cooking, especially if you do a lot of chopping, slicing, or butchering. The thick, forgiving steel makes them a great choice for confident, everyday work. We would especially recommend if you are doing heavy chopping/butchering. Thick German steel is very forgiving.

Four Star vs. Pro Series

  • Four Star: Lightweight with a smooth, rounded plastic handle and a slimmer profile. Great for people with smaller hands or anyone who wants a lighter knife to reduce fatigue—ideal for older cooks or long prep sessions.

  • Pro Series: Features a full steel tang that runs through the handle, adding weight and shifting the balance for more power. The square handle offers a sturdy grip, making it perfect for users who want extra “umpf” in their chopping.

Available as: Individual knives, starter sets, block sets, and steak knife sets.

Shun: Precision Japanese Craftsmanship

Shun knives blend style and performance with Japanese Damascus steel sharpened to a 16-degree angle on each side. They deliver precise, delicate cuts and hold a sharp edge beautifully. They’re ideal for detailed slicing and chopping but require a bit more care and aren’t recommended for heavy-duty butchering or aggressive chopping.

Classic vs. Premier

  • Classic: Features a slim, straight dark handle with a slight offset triangle shape that nests comfortably in a right hand. The blade showcases a classic Damascus pattern.

  • Premier: Has a bulkier, rounded walnut handle and a Damascus blade with hammered detailing on the spine, which helps food release.

Available as: Individual knives, starter sets, block sets, carving sets, and steak knife sets.

Victorinox: Commercial-Grade Value

Victorinox knives are built for function and affordability, making them a great choice for home cooks and professionals alike. They’re dishwasher safe and designed for practical, everyday use.

Swiss Classic vs. Fibrox

  • Swiss Classic: Smooth, contoured handle for a comfortable grip. A solid, no-fuss option for casual cooks.

  • Fibrox: Rounded handle with a non-slip grip, ideal for tasks like filleting fish or cooking for extended periods where control and comfort matter.

Available as: Individual knives in both lines.

Kyocera: Sharp, Colorful Ceramic Blades

Kyocera ceramic knives offer an extremely sharp edge that stays sharp longer than steel. The ceramic material is resistant to acid and water damage, making it ideal for cutting citrus, tomatoes, and other acidic foods. They’re also a fun way to color-code your knives or add a pop of color to your kitchen.

Important note: Ceramic blades are not flexible and are more prone to chipping or breakage if used improperly. They require careful use and shouldn’t be used for heavy-duty tasks or on hard surfaces.

Available as: Individual knives in multiple colors.
